Musée d'art moderne de Paris, Municipal art museum in 16th arrondissement, France.
The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris is an art museum in the 16th arrondissement that displays works from the 20th and 21st centuries in a large building along the Seine. The exhibition spaces spread across several floors with high ceilings and large windows that bring natural light into the rooms.
The museum opened in 1961 in a wing of the Palais de Tokyo, which was built for the International Exhibition of Arts and Technology in 1937. The city of Paris took over the building after World War Two and established its municipal modern art collection there.
The collection occupies one wing of the Palais de Tokyo and displays French modernism alongside international movements in spacious, well-lit galleries. Visitors move between rooms with cubist paintings and installations by contemporary artists, making the conversation between eras visible.
The permanent collections are free to enter without advance booking, while temporary exhibitions often require a ticket. The building opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Mondays reserved for closure.
Some galleries offer movable seating that visitors can position in front of their favorite works, making longer contemplation easier. The institution also organizes workshops for children where collective painting activities take place, later displayed in public areas.
