Château du Valasse, Gothic abbey turned into château in Seine-Maritime, France
Château du Valasse is a former Benedictine monastery that was transformed into a castle with timber-framed upper levels. The estate occupies 14 hectares of parkland filled with mature trees and now serves as an exhibition venue where contemporary art pieces are displayed across the grounds.
The Benedictine monastery Notre-Dame du Voeu was founded in the 12th century and served for centuries as a place of prayer and religious community. Following significant damage from medieval conflicts and the upheaval of the French Revolution, the estate was converted into a private residential castle.
The name Valasse derives from Latin words meaning valley and water, reflecting the original setting of this place. Today visitors can experience this connection to the natural environment while walking among contemporary sculptures and installations scattered throughout the grounds.
The park welcomes visitors daily and provides ample parking near the entrance. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since paths lead through the extensive grounds and among trees.
A tea room operates inside the historic dairy building on the grounds, serving local products to visitors. This unexpected gathering spot offers a quiet retreat within the park where guests can rest with refreshments.
