Marcillac AOC, Wine appellation in Marcillac-Vallon, France
Marcillac AOC is a wine region with about 200 hectares of terraced vineyards on steep slopes near the Lot river in Aveyron. The red soils are rich in iron oxides and shape the character of the wines.
Winemaking here traces back over a thousand years, starting under the Abbey of Conques. The region expanded greatly in the 18th century due to industrial growth in Decazeville.
The wines here pair well with local dishes like aligot, tripoux, and regional cheeses from the Aveyron area. You can taste these combinations at local wine producers and restaurants.
The steep terraced slopes require sturdy footwear and some fitness when walking through the vineyards. Spring through autumn is the best time to visit, when vines are visible and tastings are available.
The region has natural cirque formations near Albinie, where the geology contributes mineral notes to the wines. These earthy, mineral qualities set the wines apart from other French regions.
