Prieuré du Val des Nymphes

The Prieuré du Val des Nymphes is a Romanesque monastery in La Garde-Adhémar with stone walls, rounded arches, and fluted pilasters adorned with acanthus leaf capitals along its facade. The complex displays typical elements of Romanesque construction with carefully crafted architectural details throughout.

Construction of the monastery began in the 12th century under Benedictine monks from Tournus Abbey, who maintained the site until the 14th century. This long period of monastic presence shaped the development and layout of the complex.

The site preserves traces of ancient Gallo-Roman worship of nymphs near natural springs, linking religious traditions across centuries. This blend of folk spirituality and later monastic use shapes how visitors understand the place today.

The chapel facade features a trinity window arrangement with decorative archivolts supported by four successive arch rings. This elaborate architectural feature demonstrates the craftsmanship of Romanesque builders in intricate detail.
