Château de Bannes, Medieval fortress in Beaumontois-en-Périgord, France
Château de Bannes is a medieval castle with five towers topped by conical slate roofs that surround a small inner courtyard. Access to the fortified structure passes through a drawbridge gate that serves as its single entrance.
The castle was built in the 14th century for the Bishop of Sarlat and then destroyed in 1442 during the Hundred Years' War. Its reconstruction between 1510 and 1515 gave the structure the form it still has today.
The grand fireplace in the great hall displays four levels of carved panels with heraldic animals and ornaments from the Renaissance. These detailed carvings show the skill and wealth of the people who lived here during that time.
The castle is privately owned and does not allow public access to its interior. You can view the impressive towers and fortifications from the surrounding grounds outside the property.
Archaeological discoveries at the site show that the land was occupied during Roman times. Among the found objects are sarcophagi and a coin from Emperor Vespasian dating to the first century.
