Phare des Barges

The Phare des Barges is a navigation lighthouse near Les Sables-d'Olonne built from blue Avrille granite on a rocky plateau. This maritime structure stands offshore and served to guide ships safely through the waters.

Built between 1857 and 1861, this lighthouse became France's first fully automated beacon across the entire country. This innovation marked a turning point in navigation safety for the region.

The lighthouse reflects traditional maritime living with its quarters, kitchen, and watch room that housed the keepers managing ship traffic. These spaces show how lighthouse staff lived while monitoring the waters around them.
