Château de la Motte-Glain

Château de la Motte-Glain is a castle combining local schist stone with limestone from Anjou in its walls. A central pavilion stands between two round towers at the gatehouse, creating a balanced and ordered facade.

Pierre de Rohan-Gié built this castle in 1495 on the foundations of an older fortress. Soon after, it received visits from Anne of Brittany and King Charles VIII, showing its importance at the time.

The chapel holds a fresco from the 16th century, and Renaissance windows from the 15th century brighten the living spaces. These touches reveal how art and style of that era shaped the building's character.

The castle is open from June to September, closed on Mondays, with visiting hours between 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Guided tours are available in French, German, and English.

The building shows the shift from military fortress to residential palace, mixing defense features like machicolations with comfortable living spaces. This blend of strength and comfort defines its architectural character.
