Abbaye de Dommartin, Gothic abbey in Tortefontaine, France.
Abbaye de Dommartin is a monastery complex in the Authie Valley featuring Gothic architecture. The ensemble includes an abbey church and monastic residential buildings arranged across different levels of a sloping landscape.
The monastery was founded in 1121 and relocated to Dommartin hamlet in 1161. Spanish invasions and wars repeatedly damaged the structures, leading to multiple rebuilding campaigns over the following centuries.
The monastery served as a hub for learning and craftsmanship under Premonstratensian leadership. The monks shaped the spiritual and daily life of the surrounding region for centuries through their presence here.
The property is divided among private owners who maintain different sections of the buildings. Visitors should check ahead to see which areas are currently accessible, as not all parts are regularly open to the public.
Original stone capitals and an abbot's gravestone from before the major damage are now housed in the Picardie Museum in Amiens. These artifacts provide glimpses into the craftsmanship of the monks who originally worked at the site.
