Réserve naturelle nationale de l'étang des Landes, National nature reserve in Lussat, France.
The Étang des Landes reserve is a protected nature area with extensive wetlands, forests, and meadows in the Massif Central. The largest natural pond in the former Limousin region forms the centerpiece of this 165-hectare landscape.
The pond was established in 1684 when local authorities created a water system to support farming and fish production. What began as an agricultural resource eventually came to be valued for its ecological importance.
The name refers to the sandy soils characteristic of this region, a feature that has shaped the landscape for generations. This connection between the natural environment and local geography becomes clear as you walk through the reserve.
A walking path of approximately 7 kilometers connects four observation points around the pond, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. Picnic areas are distributed throughout the reserve and provide comfortable spots to rest.
The reserve is home to more than 200 bird species, making it a remarkable destination for birdwatchers. Additionally, several nationally protected plant species thrive here, found rarely elsewhere in the region.
