Abbatiale Saint-Maixent de Saint-Maixent-l'École

The Saint-Maixent abbey church features a deep underground crypt, stone vaults, and tall towers that define its medieval religious architecture.

Established in 459 by monk Agapit, the abbey developed into a religious center under the protection of King Clovis in the early 6th century.

The church holds the tombs of Saint Maixent and Saint Leger in its crypt, drawing religious pilgrims and researchers of Merovingian architecture.

Visitors can access guided tours of the church and crypt from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours during summer months and regional festivals.

The abbey church served as both a cathedral between 1790 and 1801 and later as a military facility until 2009.
