Our Lady of the Snows, Trappist monastery in Saint-Laurent-les-Bains, France
The Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Abbey stands within large forests and valleys in the Ardèche department of south-central France, at an elevation of 1000 meters.
Founded in 1850 by monks from Aiguebelle Abbey, the monastery underwent multiple reconstructions, including after a substantial fire in 1912 that required extensive rebuilding.
Charles de Foucauld spent time as a novice at the monastery in 1890, later becoming a priest and celebrating his first Mass within these walls.
The monastery produces and sells spring water, essential oils, soaps, and cleaning products to support the religious community residing there.
In 2022, after 170 years of male monastic presence, the abbey transitioned to house Cistercian nuns from Saint Mary's Abbey in Boulaur.
