Château du Bois-Cornillé

Château du Bois-Cornillé is a castle in Val-d'Izé featuring an octagonal tower made of sandstone blocks, elevated roof pavilions, and a square tower with machicolations. The structure displays architectural details that were added during neo-Gothic renovations.

Pierre Landais, treasurer of the Duchy of Brittany, rebuilt the castle during the 15th century and established its original form. In the 19th century, architects Jules and Henri Mellet carried out extensive neo-Gothic transformations.

The grounds include a park designed in the English style with French garden elements, walking paths, and a walled pond that blend different traditions.

The castle opens for special events, so advance planning is necessary to arrange a visit. Those interested should contact ahead to confirm visiting times and requirements.

The castle chapel was modified in 1903 and still contains the preserved hearts of several members of the Geffrard family from earlier centuries. This unusual practice of heart preservation speaks to the close family bonds of previous generations.
