Aquis Segeste

Aquis Segeste is a Roman archaeological site with remains of thermal baths, a sanctuary, and a theater on a large expanse of land. The ruins reveal the layout of an ancient resort where thousands of people could gather.

The place began as a Gaulish sacred site and grew into a major Roman pilgrimage destination during the occupation. Its height came during the 2nd century before decline set in during the late 4th century.

The votive offerings discovered here show that people came to pray for healing and fertility at this sacred place. The sanctuary served as a center for personal devotion and religious practice that drew visitors from across the region.

Guided tours on site make it easier to understand the different areas and their purposes. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and allow time for exploring the expansive grounds.

Two Merovingian cemeteries were discovered on the grounds, showing that people continued to live here long after the Romans left. These later burials prove the place remained important across centuries.
