Basilica of Our Lady of Avesnières, Romanesque basilica in Laval, France

The Basilica of Our Lady of Avesnières is a house of prayer built in the Romanesque style in Laval. The structure features a tiered apse with several small chapels arranged around the ambulatory, characteristic of its architectural design.

The origins of this place of worship trace back to the 11th century, and in the 12th century Benedictine nuns settled there and founded a priory. The community departed during the medieval conflicts that affected the region over many decades.

The basilica houses artworks spanning several centuries that reflect how artistic expression evolved in this place. Visitors can observe how different periods left their mark through the sculptures and altarpieces displayed throughout the interior.

The building remains accessible throughout the year for both individual visits and organized tours for groups by prior arrangement. When planning a visit, keep in mind that opening times may vary, and it is helpful to check accessibility information in advance.

In May 1944 a German military aircraft crashed into the building and caused severe structural damage. The site was then painstakingly restored and still bears traces of this dramatic event.
