Basilica of Our Lady of Avesnières

The Notre-Dame d'Avesnières Basilica features a tiered Romanesque apse from the 12th century with five radiating chapels around the ambulatory.

The church's foundations date back to the 11th century, and Benedictine nuns established a priory there in the 12th century before departing during the Hundred Years' War.

The basilica contains artistic treasures including a 14th-century Virgin Mary statue, a monumental 16th-century Saint Christopher, and a 17th-century altarpiece from Laval.

The basilica remains open year-round, offering individual visits and guided tours for groups upon reservation.

On May 31, 1944, a German aircraft crashed into the basilica, causing substantial damage that required extensive restoration work.
