Chartreuse de Bellary

Chartreuse de Bellary is a Carthusian monastery in Châteauneuf-Val-de-Bargis featuring a grand chapel, sacristy, annex chapel, and a refectory dating from the 1500s. The stone-walled complex forms an enclosed monastic compound with multiple buildings arranged for communal and private religious life.

The monastery was founded in 1209 and received special papal authorization from Pope Innocent III. This approval was unusually significant for the Carthusian community at that time.

The monastery follows Carthusian design principles where monks lived in separate cells and gathered only for prayer. The layout shows how the order valued solitude combined with community worship.

The monastery is private property and not open to the public for visits. Interested visitors should inquire in advance about possible viewing arrangements or external observation opportunities.

An altarpiece from the monastery is preserved at the Auguste-Grasset Museum in Varzy. This artwork remains one of the few objects on display elsewhere that connects visitors to the site's past.
