Château de Castelmore, Medieval castle in Lupiac, France

Château de Castelmore is a medieval fortress with a main stone building flanked by two square towers, while rounded structures stand at the north and south ends of the grounds. The property sits amid extensive lands containing woodlands, fields, and landscaped areas that surround the castle.

This fortress was the birthplace and home of Charles de Batz de Castelmore, who later became Lieutenant d'Artagnan in the King's prestigious military company. His real life adventures centuries ago inspired the adventure novels that became world-famous literature.

The name d'Artagnan is linked to this place through the man who lived here, a real musketeer who inspired Alexandre Dumas' famous novels about adventure and honor.

Visitors should expect to walk over uneven terrain since the castle sits amid woodlands and fields. Wearing comfortable shoes and allowing time to explore the surrounding lands helps visitors make the most of their visit.

The castle was recently acquired by a new owner committed to gradually opening sections to the public and revitalizing this once-hidden estate. This ongoing restoration effort means visitors can now experience parts of the grounds while watching the property transform into a place where history becomes accessible.
