Château de Chalais, Medieval fortress in Chalais, France

The castle stands on a rocky promontory between the Tude and Viveronne rivers, with its main building featuring four large windows and a central door.

Construction of the castle began in the 11th century, with Hélie de Chalais as the initial owner who attended the consecration of the Abbey of Saintes.

The castle serves as the ancestral home of the Talleyrand-Périgord family, who acquired it through marriage in the 13th century.

The castle opens Tuesday through Sunday during special periods, with guided tours presenting the architectural evolution from the 11th to the 18th century.

The famous French politician Talleyrand resided in this castle between 1758 and 1761, hosted by his great-grandmother Marie-Françoise de Rochechouart-Mortemart.
