Château de Chalais

Château de Chalais is a stone castle built on a rocky promontory between the Tude and Viveronne rivers, with large windows and a central entrance door. The buildings display multiple construction styles that were added over different centuries.

The castle was founded in the 11th century by a local nobleman named Hélie de Chalais, remaining in his family until the 13th century when it passed through marriage to the Talleyrand-Périgord family. Over the following centuries, it was repeatedly expanded and modified.

The castle served as the seat of the Talleyrand-Périgord family, whose name is deeply connected to French history and politics. Visitors can see the rooms that shaped the life of this influential dynasty.

The renowned French politician Talleyrand spent his childhood here from 1758 to 1761 with his great-grandmother. These formative years shaped the future diplomat before he began his famous political career.
