Château de Montivert, Medieval castle in Saint-André-en-Vivarais, France.
Château de Montivert is a castle in Saint-André-en-Vivarais built around a rectangular main structure with round corner towers, ornamented facades, and brick barrel-vaulted cellars situated at 1070 meters elevation. The architecture combines defensive features with residential comfort, showing how the building evolved across centuries.
The castle was founded in the 13th century as a fortified dwelling and underwent complete transformation in the mid-19th century. Under architect Pierre Martin's direction, it received its current appearance with neogothic elements for the Lacroix-Laval family.
The chapel on the second floor displays ribbed vaults and ornamental details from the 19th century, including historical paintings and stained glass windows that reflect the family's devotion.
Access to the grounds is possible from April through November when the outer areas are open to visitors. Interior viewings require advance appointment and guided tours operate year-round with knowledgeable staff.
The castle hosts one of France's oldest children's summer camps, founded over 100 years ago by a priest from Annonay. Countess Lacroix-Laval supported the venture from its start, helping create a tradition that continues to this day.
