Château de Montvéran

Château de Montvéran is a castle in Culoz featuring a rectangular main structure with machicolations and two round towers on its southern side. These towers and fortifications provide views over the valley and show the defensive design typical of medieval castles.

The castle was founded in 1316 when Pierre de Luyrieu received permission to build it despite initial objections from Louis of Savoy. A treaty eventually settled the dispute between the two parties.

The castle attracted various notable visitors throughout its life, including artists and travelers drawn to its setting overlooking the Rhône valley. The rooms and gardens reflect the lives of residents who made this their home across generations.

The grounds are accessible during summer months when regular tours are offered. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and plan for uneven terrain around the towers.

Along the path to the castle stands an ancient stone water reservoir that once supplied the seigniorial mills. This infrastructure shows how the castle was tied to the water resources of the region.
