Château de Ménessaire

Château de Ménessaire is a castle in the small town that bears its name, featuring four round towers at each corner topped with colored roofs. The fortification sits within the forests of Morvan Natural Park and offers rooms for guests as well as two separate holiday cottages housed in the feudal towers.

The castle was built in the 12th century and later underwent major renovation in the 17th century, integrating Italian Renaissance elements into its fortified design. This renovation brought new artistic techniques that appear in the preserved details of its rooms.

The castle's name reflects its location in a rural region, and its rooms show the work of craftspeople from different periods. Visitors can see these layers of the past in the spaces and structures that still stand today.

The building is accessible for overnight guests, with rooms in the main structure and in separate towers, each offering a different experience. Visitors should prepare for a forested setting and plan visits during warmer months for the most comfortable exploration.

A painted ceiling from the 17th century is part of the castle and was added to the official monuments list, indicating the skilled craftsmanship applied to its creation. This ceiling remains one of the most striking preserved examples of artistic work within the structure.
