Château de Miramont

Château de Miramont is a castle ruin on a hillside in Barbaira with a rectangular keep and scattered stone walls. The structure displays carefully fitted stones and preserved vertical shafts that once served the building's defense.

The castle was first documented in 1063 and played an important role in the region's medieval defense. In 1211 it was destroyed by royal forces under Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade.

The castle displays medieval construction methods through its arrow slits and defensive design from the 12th century. These stone features show how people in that era built fortifications to protect themselves.

You can reach the ruins by following a path uphill, which is free and accessible to explore. Take care when moving through the remaining walls and pay attention to the uneven ground.

Inside the keep, a small cornice survives that hints at a former wooden floor. An arched ceiling limits the room height and shows how the space was once used.
