Château de Mongenan, Neoclassical castle with botanical garden in Portets, France
Château de Mongenan is a neoclassical building with balanced facades, tall windows, and carefully arranged gardens near the village of Portets. The property includes multiple garden sections with different plant collections and paths laid out in regular patterns.
Baron de Gasq built the castle in the 1730s and created its gardens shortly after. The estate was designed following the ideas of leading thinkers of that period.
The castle houses a collection of furniture and objects from the 1700s that show how French aristocrats lived and what they valued. These items reveal the tastes and daily habits of the upper class from that time.
The castle and gardens can be visited year-round with guided tours available throughout this period. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since there is much ground to cover when exploring.
The gardens contain plants traditionally used in perfume making, such as tuberoses and jasmine, alongside vegetables and fruit trees dating back to the 1700s. These plantings show how estates combined beauty with practical usefulness.
