Château d'Épinal

Château d'Épinal is a castle with stone ruins perched on a hilltop overlooking the Moselle River and the city of Épinal below. The remains include walls, towers, and foundations that display different construction periods spanning several centuries.

An early fortification stood on this site around 1000, but a new fortress was built in the 13th century under orders from a regional bishop. This later stronghold shaped the landscape until it gradually fell into ruin.

The grounds reflect how medieval rulers controlled the valley below, and visitors today can sense this commanding position while walking through the stone remains. Local residents have long maintained a connection to the site as part of their city's identity.

The ruins sit on a hilltop and require climbing paths and stairs to explore all areas. Wear comfortable shoes and watch for uneven ground and crumbling stone walls as you move around the site.

Three stone pillars from the 16th century still stand upright and once formed part of a wooden bridge connecting different sections of the fortress. These rare remnants reveal how medieval builders engineered their structures.
