Château de la Vaivre, château à Rigny-sur-Arroux (Saône-et-Loire)
The château de la Vaivre is a listed historic castle in Rigny-sur-Arroux with two building phases from different periods. The older structure is rectangular with ground floor, main floor, and attic, with a square tower attached to one side.
The original castle was built in the 16th century by the de Ganay family and served for defense and residence. It underwent modifications in the 17th century by later owners, while a new building was constructed nearby in the 19th century.
The name Vaivre connects to the de Ganay family, whose history with this place stretches back to the 15th century. The building displays how successive families left their mark through architectural changes that reflect their different eras.
The castle is now in private ownership and cannot be visited inside, but the exterior view from the road provides an impression of its architecture. The location sits in a quiet area with open land and forest nearby.
The old castle area was abandoned in the 19th century and a completely new building with terraces and wings was built beside it. This unusual approach of keeping two separate structures on the same grounds shows a rare method for adapting to new needs without demolishing the past.
