Château des Cars

Château des Cars is a medieval castle in Les Cars with a square layout and sides measuring around 30 meters across. The ruins preserve towers and remnants of former stables in the lower courtyard area.

The fortress was founded in the 12th century and later served as a residence for the Pérusse family, who enlarged it during the 15th and 16th centuries. These building phases shaped the structure that remains visible today.

The stables show Renaissance details like decorated upper windows and painted horse scenes arranged in layers on the walls.

The castle ruins are partially open to visitors thanks to cooperation between the local commune and a regional archaeological group. Check locally for current access conditions and what areas are safely accessible.

The stable building stretches about 37 meters and preserves rare Renaissance decorative details, including traces of stucco designed to imitate grey stone. These craft details reveal the skill of craftsmen from that era.
