Château des Montalets, Neo-Gothic mansion in Meudon, France.
Description
Château des Montalets is a Neo-Gothic mansion built in the late 19th century, constructed with brick and stone along Boulevard Anatole-France in Meudon. The property is enclosed by a walled park that surrounds the main residence and includes several smaller buildings on its grounds.
History
The mansion was built in the late 19th century by François Bouret and later purchased by the PTT mutual fund, a postal workers' organization. The property was then converted to serve as an orphanage for children of postal workers.
Culture
The name Montalets comes from a spelling variation of the Montalais domain documented in local records. The estate reflects the French tradition of keeping grand residences as landmarks within residential neighborhoods.
Practical
The property sits on elevated ground above former quarries, which explains the steep terrain around the area. Visitors should be aware of this unusual topography when exploring the surroundings and planning their visit.
Did you know?
The property was built atop former stone quarries underground, which created problems when the city of Meudon considered converting it into a school. The unstable ground conditions made such a conversion technically challenging.
