Église Saint-Montain, Church in La Fère, France

The Collégiale Saint-Montain de La Fère is a stone church in the center of La Fère, in the Aisne department, classified as a historical monument since 1921. The building combines Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements added over the centuries, including a barrel vault decorated with fleurs-de-lis and an 11th-century portal.

The church was founded at the end of the 10th century, likely on the site of a cave where a hermit named Montain had lived. In the 16th century, Marie de Luxembourg had the building reshaped, but later the French Revolution destroyed the bell tower, which has not been rebuilt since.

The church portal shows two different styles side by side: the lower parts follow the Romanesque tradition, while the upper arches already take on Gothic forms. This shift is readable directly in the stone, making the entrance a rare visible record of an architectural transition.

Access to the church is currently limited, as it is closed for safety and conservation reasons. To visit the interior, it is worth contacting the nearby Musée Jeanne d'Aboville beforehand, as it can sometimes arrange a special opening.

During restoration work in the 1980s, archaeologists found fragments of old tombstones and painted tiles from the 16th century beneath the church floor. The church originally had fourteen chapels, of which only four remain today.
