Croix du Nivolet, Summit cross and benchmark at Dent du Nivolet peak in Les Déserts, France
The Croix du Nivolet is a metal cross standing at the summit of Dent du Nivolet in the Bauges mountain range. It sits at 1545 meters elevation and serves as a landmark visible across the surrounding region.
The original cross from the 19th century was destroyed during a 1909 storm. A new structure made with reinforced concrete and aluminum was built afterward and remains in place today.
The cross serves as a reference point for the local population, standing as a symbol of religious heritage visible from multiple locations in Chambéry.
The trail to the summit starts from the La Féclaz parking area and includes steep sections requiring sturdy footwear. Marked paths exist throughout, though fog can make navigation difficult in this region.
On clear days, visitors can see lakes and mountains across the entire surrounding region from this vantage point. A shadow phenomenon called the Brocken Spectre can appear on cloudy days when conditions align correctly at this elevation.
