Noisetier Cave

Noisetier Cave is a prehistoric archaeological site with multiple chambers located within limestone formations at roughly 672 meters in elevation. The cave contains various mineral deposits and geological features that developed over many millennia.

Archaeological excavations have revealed Mousterian period stone tools and traces of Neanderthal settlements dating back roughly 50,000 years. These discoveries show that early humans occupied this cave over an extended period.

The stone tools and animal bones found here reveal how Neanderthals hunted and made their equipment. These objects tell us about their daily skills and the way they organized their lives.

Access to this site requires joining guided tours that depart from Fréchet-Aure village, with proper equipment and advance booking needed. Visitors should expect uneven ground and cool conditions, so sturdy footwear and warm clothing are recommended.

The cave maintains a steady temperature year-round, preserving numerous archaeological artifacts in their original state. This allowed researchers to study organic materials that would have decayed under normal conditions.
