Lac de la Roucarié, reservoir in France
Lac de la Roucarié is a large artificial reservoir near Carmaux covering approximately 35 hectares with partially forested shorelines. The lake features walking paths circling the water, playgrounds for children, fitness trails, and water sports including sailing, rowing, and canoeing.
The reservoir was created long ago to irrigate fields and supply water to nearby villages. Over time its purpose shifted, and today it primarily serves as a destination for leisure and water sports activities.
The lake serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors spend leisure time together in a relaxed way. You will notice joggers, families walking, and groups enjoying meals outdoors throughout the day.
The lake is easily accessible from Carmaux and welcomes both day visitors and organized groups who should register in advance. Lifeguards monitor the swimming area at Almayrac from early July through mid-August, ensuring safe bathing.
The water level changes noticeably with the seasons, often dropping considerably during summer while remaining fuller in winter. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns brilliant shades of yellow and red, reflecting in the water to create striking scenes that photographers and nature observers particularly appreciate.
