Ponts de Thouaré, Two metal bridges in Thouaré-sur-Loire, France
The Thouaré bridges are two consecutive steel structures that span the Loire River. They connect the village with Saint-Julien-de-Concelles by passing over Chesnaie Island and serve as a key transportation link in the region.
The bridges were completed in 1882 and provided the first road crossing over the Loire in this area. They were damaged during World War II but later rebuilt to continue serving the region.
These transportation structures mark the first road crossing point on the Loire upstream from Nantes until the construction of Bellevue Bridge in the late 1960s.
The bridges are easily accessible on foot or by car and form a natural passage through the village. Visitors should explore the best viewing points from the riverbank to fully appreciate the structures.
The bridges feature ten intermediate spans of 45 meters each and two bank spans of 39 meters, supported by twelve masonry piers.
