Réserve naturelle de l'étang de Biguglia

The Réserve naturelle de l'étang de Biguglia is a large protected area centered on an expansive lagoon linked to the Tyrrhenian Sea through a narrow channel. The lagoon features reed beds and shallow shores where water and land blend together.

The area was settled and used by ancient Roman populations and later Italian peoples for trade and fishing. The Biguglia Fort was built in the 16th century as a defensive structure protecting the nearby city of Bastia.

The ecomuseum in the historic Fortin building displays exhibits on traditional fishing practices and how local people have long interacted with this wetland. You can see how daily life has been connected to the lagoon for generations.

A discovery path allows you to walk easily along the lagoon edge, where you can watch from the shore. The visitor center offers guided tours that help you understand the different habitats and wildlife viewing opportunities.

About 120 bird species use the lagoon at different times of year, making it a key stopping point for migrating birds. Among the water plants you can find the rare Kosteletzkya, whose colorful flowers bloom among the reeds.
