Église Santa-Maria-Assunta de Furiani

Église Santa-Maria-Assunta de Furiani is a chapel with a single nave set on a mountain slope. The interior space stretches about 12 meters long and 5 meters wide, creating a modest but complete place of worship.

The eastern part of the chapel including the apse and western facade traces back to a 9th-century sanctuary. The structure underwent renovation in the 10th century, and the frescoes visible today were added in the 15th century.

The chapel holds 15th-century frescoes showing Christ in majesty surrounded by the twelve apostles and religious narratives. These paintings reflect how the space served as a place of spiritual devotion and artistic expression for those who visited it.

Getting there requires roughly a 40-minute walk from the village parking area, with a steady uphill climb of about 160 meters. A marked trail guides the way, so sturdy shoes and basic fitness are helpful for a comfortable visit.

On clear days visitors can spot several Tuscan islands from this location, including Capraia and Elba in the distance. The expansive view rewards those who make the effort to reach this remote spot.
