Chapelle Notre-Dame de Montserato, Catholic chapel in Bastia, France
The Notre-Dame de Montserato Chapel stands on the heights of Bastia with its neoclassical facade and marble statue of the Virgin and Child from 1637.
The chapel, founded in the 16th century, sustained damage during a Genoese attack in 1761 before undergoing complete restoration and receiving monument status in 1995.
Pope Pius VII granted the chapel a holy staircase in 1816 as gratitude for the local population's support of religious exiles during the Concordat period.
Located at 73 Chemin de Scala Santa, the chapel maintains regular mass services and welcomes visitors who wish to climb the 33 red steps.
The chapel contains one of only ten sacred staircases in the world, where faithful visitors ascend on their knees while reciting prayers for spiritual indulgence.
