Oratoire Saint-Roch de Bastia, Religious oratory in Terra Vechja district, Bastia, France.
Oratoire Saint-Roch is a religious chapel in Terra Vechia with a neoclassical facade featuring four columns and a triangular pediment. A white marble entrance portal sits beneath a carved pilgrim shell that crowns the doorway.
The current building was constructed in 1604 after the previous structure collapsed, which had been built following the 1569 plague epidemic. This reconstruction established a more permanent house of worship for the community.
The interior walls display red silk damask that reflects Genoese craftsmanship traditions practiced in the region. This style appears throughout the gilt stucco work that defines the chapel's character.
The chapel opens for visits by request, so planning ahead is necessary to enter. A major celebration occurs each August 16th with a mass and procession through the city streets when the building is open to the public.
The main altar holds a 1692 altarpiece crafted locally alongside a 17th-century painting by Florentine artist Giovanni Bilivert. The painting underwent restoration in 2016, revealing the artistic quality preserved through the centuries.
