Théâtre du Tourtour, Performance venue in 4th arrondissement, France
Théâtre du Tourtour occupied a vaulted cellar space on Rue Quincampoix and provided seating for about 200 spectators per performance. The single chamber layout created an intimate atmosphere where performers and audiences connected closely within the stone underground setting.
The venue opened in 1981 and became a space for artistic experimentation and fresh productions until it closed in 2000. During those two decades, it showed works by various artists and supported both emerging and established talents in the French theater world.
The venue hosted performances of avant-garde works that challenged traditional theatrical forms and engaged audiences seeking experimental productions. Artists who performed here represented a generation interested in pushing boundaries and exploring new creative possibilities in performance.
The theater sat in the heart of the Marais district with good access via multiple transit lines and plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. The underground location meant visitors had to descend stairs to reach the auditorium from street level.
Indie group Mano Solo recorded a live album titled 'Internationale Sha la la' here in 1995. This recording became an important document of French independent music from the 1990s.
