Saint-Salomon church of La Martyre

Saint-Salomon is a church with International Gothic features in La Martyre, built over several centuries with clear differences between its sections. The western tower displays a portal area with kersantite stone carvings, while the stone chancel features worked supports and vaulting inside.

The tower was built in the 13th century as the foundation for the building's expansion. After a storm struck in 1450, the main sections of the nave and chancel were rebuilt or renewed over the following century.

The stone carvings display artistic influences from Antwerp workshops, visible in the 16th-century stained glass windows that still fill the interior with colored light. Craftspeople from the north brought their techniques, shaping how the building looks from within.

The church sits in the center of La Martyre and is easy to reach via Saint-Salomon Street. The location is flat and walkable, with enough space to view the exterior from different angles and approach the entrance without difficulty.

Above the triumphal arch sits a fortified gallery where archers once kept watch over marketplace gatherings. This feature shows how church buildings sometimes served a protective role in community life.
