Fort de Villiers, Military fortification in Noisy-le-Grand, France.
Fort de Villiers is a military fortification from the late 19th century that spans seven hectares on the southern side of the A4 autoroute. The site displays characteristic military architecture of that era with bastions and casemates.
The fort was built between 1878 and 1880 as part of the Séré de Rivières system to strengthen Paris defenses following the Franco-Prussian War. This defensive system was a response to French military defeat and aimed at long-term regional protection.
The fort served as emergency housing from the 1950s onward and later housed community organizations until 2009. This transformation shows how the place adapted to changing local needs.
The site received regional heritage status in 2018 and visitors can explore it via educational walking paths. These paths connect different sections of the fort, allowing a complete tour of the complex.
The fort was originally equipped with eighteen long-range guns, ten smaller guns for casemates, and three mortars. This weaponry configuration made it a significant point in the defensive ring around the French capital.
