Château de La Salveterra, Medieval fortress in Opoul-Périllos, France

The castle stands on a limestone plateau at 400 meters altitude, featuring remnants of a fortified enclosure, tower, vaulted rooms and defensive structures.

King James I of Aragon ordered the construction of Château de La Salveterra in 1246 to establish a defensive line along the French-Aragonese border.

The fortress provided tax exemptions and asylum rights to attract inhabitants, creating an autonomous community of farmers and refugees in this remote area.

Visitors can access the castle ruins through a marked path leading to the plateau, though caution is advised during strong winds.

Two water cisterns carved into the rock remain visible, demonstrating the medieval engineering solutions for water storage in this dry region.
