Château de Saint-Symphorien-des-Monts, château français situé à Saint-Symphorien-des-Monts
The château de Saint-Symphorien-des-Monts is a historic complex in Buais-les-Monts with a large park and surviving outbuildings. The site features a square keep from the 13th century, a farmhouse from the 16th century with a thatched roof, and several restored dwellings set among old trees and open fields.
The original fortress was built in the 13th century with a moat and drawbridge. It was expanded by a new building in 1620 and seized during the French Revolution in 1793, but a major fire in 1916 destroyed the main structure.
The name refers to Saint Symphorien and the hilly terrain of Normandy where it stands. Over centuries, the building served as a center of local social life and gathered the community within its walls.
The site is accessible by local roads and suitable for day trips into rural Normandy. The park has wide paths and open spaces that are easy to walk through, and visitors can explore the grounds at their own pace.
After the storm Lothar in 1999 damaged the park heavily, volunteers worked to restore it from 2012 onward. Today the grounds host modern music festivals that blend historical heritage with contemporary events.
