Cheptainville Zoo, Animal park in Cheptainville, France
Cheptainville Zoo was a small facility spanning about 3 hectares that housed diverse animals including meerkats, lemurs, wallabies, macaws, and turtles. The enclosures were designed with children's eye level in mind to provide direct observation of the animals.
The facility opened in 2002 under the name L'Île aux oiseaux and attracted around 30,000 visitors each year. It closed permanently in January 2018.
The facility organized regular educational workshops and conferences focused on nature conservation, biodiversity protection, and environmental challenges facing the planet.
The zoo remained open year-round with winter hours from 10 AM to 6:30 PM and extended hours until dusk during May through September. Visitors could explore the grounds throughout all seasons, though the longer summer days provided more time to visit.
The zoo featured semi-free environments for many of its animals, allowing visitors to experience closer encounters with various species in controlled settings. This proximity made the experience quite different from typical zoos where animals are viewed behind solid barriers.
