Pont de Saint-Goustan

The Pont de Saint-Goustan is a medieval stone bridge that spans the Auray River with four basket-handle arches supported by thick piers on each side. The structure measures about 10.65 meters wide and creates a direct passage from the city center to the historic port district.

The structure was built in 1464 and represents medieval trade architecture in Brittany. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous repairs due to the effects of tidal currents on its foundations and stonework.

The bridge shapes the character of Auray's old harbor quarter and serves as a natural gathering point where locals and visitors meet. It connects the city center directly to the port district, creating a focal point when exploring the riverside.

The pedestrian passage is narrow and requires care when meeting other walkers, particularly during busy times at the harbor. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best to avoid crowds and capture clearer views of the structure.

The bridge's silhouette was incorporated into Auray's official municipal emblem in 1988, marking its role as the city's defining landmark. This reflects how deeply the historic structure is woven into local identity.
