Château de Vachères

The château de Vachères is a castle in Présailles built with four towers surrounding a central courtyard in a square layout. The walls contain building elements from different time periods, as the structure was expanded and modified over several centuries.

The castle was built in the 15th and 16th centuries as an expansion of a keep from the 13th century, commissioned by the Grammont family. The original fortress was later renovated and eventually served as a residential home for the noble family.

The castle shows how French noble homes changed from military strongholds into comfortable residences over time. You can see this shift in the stone walls and windows as you walk through the rooms and courtyards.

The castle is easy to approach from outside, and the square layout with four towers makes it simple to find your way once you enter the courtyard. It is best to wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the walls and towers may involve walking on uneven ground.

The walls still show arrow slits, gun ports, and other defensive structures that reveal regional conflicts from past centuries. These military features are subtle at first glance, but closer inspection reveals a hidden system of defense built into the stone.
