Château de Dumphlun

Château de Dumphlun is a multi-period castle in Billy-Chevannes featuring a main building, a watchtower, and extensive stables with farm structures. The buildings stretch across the property to form a connected courtyard complex.

The castle was built between the 15th and 18th centuries and initially served as a defensive fortress during the Hundred Years' War. In 1428, English forces captured it, marking a major military event in its history.

The castle displays features of traditional Nivernais architecture with stonework typical of the region. The Rémigny family shaped its appearance through new wings and large agricultural buildings that still define the estate today.

Access to the castle is best arranged during guided tour days when the interior and surrounding areas are open to visitors. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable since exploration involves walking through multiple courtyards, gardens, and wooded sections.

Nearby archaeological excavations uncovered a protohistoric burial mound with multiple skeletons and ancient artifacts from the area. These finds are now displayed in Nevers Museum and reveal that the site was inhabited long before the castle was built.
