The original castle was built in 853 under Charles the Bald's orders to defend the region against Norman invaders and underwent multiple reconstructions throughout centuries.

Guided tours are available in French, English, and German, with admission fees of 8 euros for adults and free entry for children under 15 years old.
The castle served as headquarters for the British 4th Army during World War I and received a visit from King George V in 1916.
