Maison du docteur Gachet

The Maison du docteur Gachet is a three-story white house in Auvers-sur-Oise with a tiled roof and south-facing views toward the Oise valley. Inside, period furnishings and decorations fill multiple rooms that visitors can explore to understand how the space functioned during its time as an artist's hub.

Doctor Paul Ferdinand Gachet acquired the house in 1872 and transformed it into an artistic center. Over the following decades, it became a significant place where painters worked and the modern art movement developed.

The residence served as a gathering place for artists and Impressionists who came to work and exchange ideas in this creative environment. This gathering reflected the artistic community that formed around the doctor and his passion for modern painting.

The house opens from late March through early November and is best explored with guided tours that lead through restored rooms and the medicinal garden. Visitors should allow enough time to see all the spaces at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed.

The garden contains an artist workshop carved directly into chalk cliffs where painters and engravers worked on their craft. This underground space reveals the practical side of artistic creation that visitors often miss when touring the main house.
