Château de Picomtal

Château de Picomtal is a fortress located between Lake Serre-Ponçon and the Écrins Mountain Range, featuring four towers with Renaissance architectural elements. The structure spans multiple levels showing different building phases from its development.

The fortress began in 1080 as a wooden fortification but was replaced by a stone tower in the 13th century, forming the foundation for later expansions. These additions and modifications continued through the 14th century and shaped the building we see today.

The castle's name reflects connections to the local alpine landscape and geography of the valley. Visitors can observe how the rooms blend their medieval origins with modern residential use today.

The castle offers several suites accommodating up to four people each, with different furnishings and views in each room. The hilltop location means access involves pathways that may vary in condition depending on the season.

During renovations in the 1880s, carpenter Joachim Martin wrote detailed personal notes hidden under the floorboards, documenting daily life in the French Alpine village. These concealed writings offer today's visitors an unexpected glimpse into the area's past.
