Église Saint-Michel de Bourbach-le-Haut, Church in Bourbach-le-Haut, Alsace, France
The église Saint-Michel de Bourbach-le-Haut is a church located along the main road of the village of Bourbach-le-Haut, in the Alsace region of France. The building has stone walls, a bell tower, and a slate roof typical of the surrounding mountain area.
The current church was built in 1822 on a site where an earlier place of worship had already stood. The tower was struck by lightning in 1909, and the repairs that followed were not completed until 1964.
The church is named after the archangel Michael, a patron figure widely venerated across Alsace. Inside the choir, a fresco painted by an artist named Gall from Colmar depicts religious scenes in a style inspired by medieval painting.
The church stands directly on the village's main road and is easy to spot from the street at any time. The entrance faces a small square that also serves as a gathering point during local events.
Although repairs to the tower began after the 1909 lightning strike, they took nearly 55 years to complete, finishing only in 1964. The building appears in the general inventory of cultural heritage without holding the status of a fully listed historic monument.
