Višnjan Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Višnjan, Croatia
Višnjan Observatory is an astronomical research facility equipped with eleven telescopes located in the village of Višnjan. The site features observation areas, lecture halls, and classroom spaces where visitors can explore the cosmos using modern instruments.
The facility was established in 1992 in Višnjan but relocated to a new location near Tičan in 2009. This move became necessary because artificial light from the surrounding area was increasingly interfering with observations at the original site.
The observatory functions as a hub where young people engage in hands-on astronomy and research. Visitors often encounter students and researchers working at the telescopes, actively involved in scientific projects that connect them to the night sky.
Visitors can participate in observation programs offered throughout the year at the facility. It is best to inquire ahead of time to find the right moment for a group visit or to arrange a personal experience.
The observatory has contributed to the discovery of over 1400 asteroids and two comets, placing it among the most productive facilities of its kind globally. These achievements make it an important center for studying objects near Earth.
