Croatia, Mediterranean country in Southeast Europe, bordered by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and the Adriatic Sea.
Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe that reaches from the alpine foothills to the Adriatic Sea. The landscape includes mountain ranges, fertile plains in the east, and more than a thousand islands along the coast.
The territory became independent in 1991 after Yugoslavia dissolved. In the following years the republic rebuilt its infrastructure and joined the European Union in 2013.
The national heritage combines Slavic traditions with Mediterranean influences, visible in architecture, cuisine, music, and religious practices across twenty counties.
Since joining the Schengen Area in 2023 the borders with neighboring Union members remain open. Travelers can choose between several airports, coastal towns, and larger cities inland.
The necktie originated from scarves worn by Croatian cavalry who served in France during the 17th century. The French word for Croatian gave the garment its name.

The Croatian beaches range from sandy expanses to pebble coves along the Adriatic coast and islands. Some beaches provide sports facilities and restaurants, while others remain in their natural state. The water is clear, and the Mediterranean climate allows for swimming from spring to autumn. Many beaches offer access to historical sites and local restaurants.
The campgrounds along the Croatian coast offer sites by the Adriatic Sea with modern sanitary facilities. These sites allow accommodation in tents, caravans, or mobile homes. Most have outdoor pools, restaurants, shops, and sports activities. The campgrounds are spread between the Istrian peninsula in the north and the Dalmatia region in the south, often surrounded by Mediterranean pine woods with direct access to beaches.
